Job Overview

The Communications Technician III is responsible for the planning, layout and complete installation of new and retrofit communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards for a particular project. This includes conducting site surveys, pulling cable, terminating and testing both copper and fiber optic cable to the highest level of specifications as well as installing ancillary communications systems.

The candidate must have experience with the installation, termination and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments. Hospital or Airport installations will be a plus. The candidate should have knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper install and termination procedures. Employees must provide their own hand tools. This position requires the ability to train and supervise apprentices in a team environment while facilitating the installation of cabling and electronics. A focus on safety, quality, production and schedule is fundamental to all work performed. Employees are expected to be committed to excellence and generate a high quality of work. All employees are expected to consistently report to work on time, work well with other employees to accomplish a common goal, and maintain a safe work environment. M.C. Dean will provide a safety hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and safety vest which must be worn at all times while on the job site. Employees are required to provide and wear long pants, a shirt with at least a 4" sleeve and safety toed boots.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installation of video and data cable with Cat 5E, Cat 6, Cat 6A as well as fiber cable.

  • Terminating and testing of horizontal copper (Cat 5E, Cat 6, Cat 6A).

  • Termination of riser cable.

  • Installation of patch panels.

  • Label and test horizontal cable.

  • Installation of backbone and riser cable (copper & fiber).

  • Installation of interior conduit, and other wire management products.

  • Read and understand plans and specifications.

  • Installation of plywood, ladder racks, cabinets, and racks.

  • Installation of cable trays in communications rooms.

  • Assist in OSP (outside plant) installations.

  • Pulling cable 100 pair or smaller unassisted.

  • Installing prefab assembly unassisted.

  • Assisting in bonding communications systems.

  • Assisting in Pulling Low Voltage Cable.

  • Assisting in pulling all sizes of communications cables.

  • Participating in Job site cleanup.

  • Maintaining clean work area.

  • Installing Sleeves, Panduit and ENT.

  • Installing pull and junction boxes up to 24” x 24”.

  • Assisting with Tugger setup and use for large wire and long pulls (Pulley Wheels, Capstans wheel, Chains, etc. To operate a Tugger requires certification).

  • Assisting with calculating wire load and conduit sizing layout.

  • Assisting with Exterior underground layout.

  • Assisting with interior overhead and under floor raceways layouts for telecom.

  • Assisting with splicing crimp tools and installation of Mechanical Lugs.

  • Assisting with bonding service entry equip and metallic portions.

  • Performing an Operational Risk Management Briefing for any task mastered to date.

  • Generating or adding to an Activity Hazard Analysis for any task mastered.

  • Contributing to the Risk Register for any defined feature of work mastered.

  • Troubleshoot and fix Cat5E , 6 and 6A cable problems.

  • Terminate various manufacturers of copper termination blocks.

  • Knowledge of all fiber termination connectors.

  • Knowledge of all makes of fiber optics cable.

Qualifications / Skills Sets / Expectations:

  • 6 + years prior experience in commercial communications industry

  • High School diploma or GED is required

  • Must have an excellent safety record, a valid driver's license, and clean driving record in order to meet corporate eligibility requirements to drive a company owned vehicle.

  • Successfully pass a background check and drug test

  • Have reliable transportation to and from the jobsite

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to read and understanding plans and specifications.

  • Strong communications, time management and organization skills to meet deadlines and quality objectives

  • Consistently report to work on time, work well with other to accomplish a common goal and maintain a safe work environment

Physical Abilities:

  • Lifts at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for an extended period of time.

  • Relocate up to a twelve foot stepladder without assistance.

  • Ability to work at various heights, can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and all types of ladders.

  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.

  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to distinguish color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.

  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.

  • See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

  • Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events)

Desired Skills:

  • BICSI credentials to include Technician

  • Manufacture Certifications and/or Fiber Certification.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
